It's the start of a new calendar year: a new beginning. Have you made a New Year's Resolution yet? At Playster our resolution every year is to read more books—always a great idea for everyone. To help kickstart our resolution, we've matched up our favorite books with every horoscope. Find your perfect book match and join us in beginning a year of auspicious reading!
There's no better book for Capricorns than Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham. Despite her somewhat impractical character in Girls, Lena is no Hannah Horvath, having won 2 Golden Globe Awards, a Director's Guild of America Award and 8 Emmy nominations, all before her 30th birthday! As a Capricorn you've got a great sense of humor and a true appreciation of practical, hard work. Not That Kind of Girl combines these things, exemplifying what you can achieve by being unstoppable. This year, be like Lena: don't stop until you get what you want!
People born under the sign of Aquarius are fun, adventurous and mysterious... and also a little bit basic (this isn't necessarily a bad thing!) As an Aquarius, you'll definitely love the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard. When the leader of a clique of girls mysteriously vanishes, the group tries to figure out what happened to her as they deal with threatening messages from an anonymous figure. Pretty Little Liars is a dark tale of friendship that will keep you guessing until the very end. If anything, it'll teach you the value of keeping your friends (and your enemies!) close this year.
As a Pisces you're a creative, sensitive person who needs an escape once in a while (you obviously LOVE reading). One of our favorite books from this year was Kelly Link's Get in Trouble. Known for her magic realism, Link's supernatural shorts are the perfect way to get away from it all. We especially recommend reading her story "The Summer People", just because it's about as far from winter as we can imagine right now. This is a year to forget your problems and relax.
As an Aries you're eternally optimistic... a good quality to have when you find yourself trapped in a dystopian environment with no hope for survival. Our favorite dystopian YA novel right now is Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen (read our interview with her here). While we're not certain, we're prettyyyyy sure that Mare Barrow is at least an honorary Aries. Independent? Check. Impulsive? Check. A born leader? Check. Read Red Queen on Playster and see if you agree!
Taurus (Tauruses? Tauri?) are stubborn beasts. You know who else was a stubborn beast? Captain Ahab, owner of the Queequeg and relentless hunter of the murderous white whale, Moby Dick. As a Taurus, your incredible patience and stamina will come in handy as you make your way through one of the longest and most engrossing popular novels ever. Thanks to Playster's convenient e-book format, you can carry Moby Dick around in your pocket! Start reading it today!
Oh, Gemini, you crazy son of a gun. We just don't know what to think of you—nobody does! For you we're recommending Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, because it's all about plot twists, unreliable narration and suspense. Like, you know, being friends with a Gemini. Heyo!
As a Cancer you crave human attention, even if you don't necessarily want to show it. This attitude reminds us a lot of Christian Grey. Even though he's not quite a Cancer (his birthday's on June 18th!), he definitely checks a lot of the boxes, from his shrewd business sense to his moody, broody nature. Grey is the perfect book for Cancers who can't let go of their emotions despite their best efforts. And if you're not over 50 Shades yet, this is just the ticket...
Leo. The Lion. The king of all beasts. Broad-minded and magnanimous, an outgoing Leo like you would do famously well in the kingdom of Westerros. With social skills like yours, you might just find yourself contending for the Iron Throne...but is that something you'd really want? Read the Game of Thrones series and decide for yourself!
Ah, Virgo. The classic type-A personality, you've always got your head down in a book... while secretly plotting world domination! If you're going to make those plans a reality, why not read #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso? This book details Amoruso's unconventional path to success, going from a broke art school ID-checker to the head honcho of Nasty Gal, a global fashion empire worth a quarter of a billion dollars. Virgos, this year, dress for success. Get started with #Girlboss.
Who better represents the Libra's need for equilibrium than spiritual guru Deepak Chopra? In The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Chopra shows us how success can be a walk in the park, if only you open yourself up to it. As a Libra you can be indecisive and changeable at times, but Chopra's book will help you fulfill all of your deepest desires and manifest everything you've been dreaming about. All it takes is finding the perfect balance in your life. Read this book and watch everything fall into place.
Scorpios are known for stamina and persistence: if you want something, you're going to get it, no matter what it takes. Unbroken is all about that on a deep level. This biography chronicles the life of World War II hero Louis Zamperini. He's demonstrated more will to live than perhaps anyone on this planet, surviving a series of harrowing circumstances from a Pacific plane crash to 47 days trapped at sea to more than 2 years as a P.O.W. in Japan. Angelina Jolie made a movie based on this novel, but this book is seriously a must-read. Scorpios, this year, let nothing stand in your way.
Barney Stinson's The Bro Code was written for guys, particularly guys born under the sign of Sagittarius (or so we choose to believe). A light read, it plays perfectly on the superficiality of your sign and shows that it's OK to laugh at yourself every once in a while. If your New Years Resolution is to learn how to be a better bro, we can't recommend a better—or more hilarious—resource!
